Studies on the Constituents of the Higher Fungi of Korea (30)

Abstract
To investigate antibiotic components of Korean higher fungi, the authors assayed the carpophores of Cryptoporus volvatus (Pk.) Hubb. collected at the Gwang-neong area from 1979 to 1980. The powdered carpophores (12.5g) were extracted with chloroform-methanol (1 : 2). From the extract, a thick oily substance was obtained upon evaporating under vacuum. When re-extracted with ether and water, this yielded three fractions [ether fraction, water fraction and insoluble precipitate (88§·)]. Each fraction was assayed for its antibiotic activities gainst Bacillus subtillis ATCC 6633, Sarcina lutea ATCC 9341, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25923 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 using kanamycin as a standard. The dark brown insoluble fraction was found to be active against E.coli. Three fractions showing different R_f values on TLC were obtained when the insoluble fraction was applied to silica gel column and elluted with chloroform: methanol (1 : 1). The compound with R_f value of 0.39 was found to be the antibiotic component of Cryptoporus volvatus.
